Distribution: A moderate sized deciduous tree found wild or planted throughout the deciduous forest of tropical Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Southeast Asia and China up to 2000m. 

Description of Plant: The tree is perennial small to medium size and wild. Stem is glabrous. Leaves are simple, sub-sessile (petiole is very short), resembling pinnate leaves (having similar parts arranged on opposite sides).Flower of amala is small, greenish-yellow or pinkish. Flower has six segments without real petals. Amala are small, round berries with light green skin. The skin of amala is thin with a flesh with juicy and crisp having slightly bitter and sour taste.

Parts Used for Medicinal and Cosmetic purpose: All parts of the plant are used in various Ayurvedic medicine herbal preparation including root, bark, leaves, fruits and seed.

It is rich source of vitamin C.

The fiber in amala berries helps for better digestion.
